Replika alternatives — what to try, and when to stay

Checked against Replika on . Pricing and features in this category change constantly — check anything that matters to you.

Conflict of interest: we build Akina, one of the apps on this page. Read this as a competitor’s read on the field, not a neutral ranking. Everything we say about Replika comes from their own pages, linked above.

What Replika is

Replika is the oldest well-known AI companion app and the one most built around being present in your life rather than being chatted with. Its own page leads with calls you can make any time, a customisable avatar, selfies, and reacting to photos you send. If you want something that feels like it is around, it is still the most complete answer in this category.

Why people look for something else

You want the rules to stay put
Replika has changed what it allows more than once, and each change landed hard on people who had built a routine around it. That is not unique to them — this is a category where app-store rules, payment processors and public pressure all collide — but if stability is the thing you actually want, it is the risk to price in.
You want to be met rather than to configure
A lot of Replika is customisation: the avatar, the traits, the interests. Some people want exactly that. Others open it, look at the sliders, and realise they wanted the app to have an opinion about who would suit them.
You want it to stay SFW without you managing it
Whether a companion app is adult-oriented is a legitimate choice in either direction. If your reason for looking is that you want a version of this that is not, that narrows the field considerably — most of this category is 18+.

When Replika is still the right answer

  • You want a face and a voice. The avatar and call work is genuinely ahead of the rest of the field, and nothing here is close.
  • You have been there a while. Whatever the app does, it has your history — and in this category history is most of the value. Starting over costs more than most feature differences are worth.
  • You want something that has been running for years. Replika can tell you what month twelve looks like. Most of the alternatives, us included, cannot.

The alternatives worth knowing about

Nomi

An ongoing story with a cast. It advertises short, medium and long-term memory, voice calls, and group chats where several companions interact with each other and with you — that group mechanic is the most interesting feature in the category and nobody else really has it. It also asks the most of you: you are building and steering.

Character.AI

Trying fifty things for free to find out what you even like. The biggest library of user-created characters, so the range is unmatched and the quality is a lottery. Not built for a single relationship that deepens.

Akina

Being matched rather than choosing, and staying SFW. A 30-question test grounded in attachment theory, then eight written companions scored against your result. Five messages before anyone asks you to sign up.

When Akina is the wrong choice

Questions people ask

What is the closest alternative to Replika?
It depends on which part of Replika you are replacing. For the avatar and voice presence, nothing in this category is close yet. For an ongoing story with several companions, Nomi. For breadth and free experimentation, Character.AI. For being matched to a written companion rather than customising one, and for staying SFW, Akina.
Is there a free alternative to Replika?
All of the apps named on this page have a free tier. Akina lets you send five messages before it asks you to make an account, and the conversation carries over when you do.
Why do people look for Replika alternatives?
The three reasons we hear most are wanting the rules to stay put, wanting to be matched rather than to configure a companion yourself, and wanting a version of this that is SFW without having to manage that.
Should I switch away from Replika?
If you have been there a while, probably not on features alone. In this category the history is most of the value, and starting over costs more than most feature differences are worth. Switch if what you want is something Replika structurally does not do.
Is Akina SFW?
Yes. It is SFW by design rather than by filter, which is a trade rather than a virtue: you give up a category of content, and you get a product that can run on mainstream app stores and ad platforms without depending on a policy decision it does not control.

If being matched is the part you want

30 questions, about five minutes, no account. Then the three companions that score highest for you, with the reason why. You get 5 messages before anyone asks you to sign up, and the conversation carries over when you do.
